Antigen Information
Introduction
Measles virus (MV or MeV) is a single-stranded, negative-sense, enveloped (non-segmented) RNA virus of the genus Morbillivirus within the family Paramyxoviridae. It targets human as its natural host (no animal reservoirs are reported up to now). The measles virus is the cause of measles, an infection of the respiratory system. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a generalized, maculopapular, erythematous rash. The virus is highly contagious and is spread by coughing and sneezing via close personal contact or direct contact with secretions. Measles affects more than 20 million people all over the world each year, mainly in developing areas in Asia and Africa. Despite the fact that measles virus is serologically monotypic, eight clades of measles have been classified and are named from A to H. They are further catalogued into 23 sub types. Major genotype is different in different areas.
