Phytopathology reagents - Malt Extract
Malt Extract is a dehydrated extract of malt for use in
preparing microbiological culture media in a laboratory setting. Malt Extract
Powder is prepared from aqueous extract of sprouted malt grains and dried at
low temperature to preserve nutrients present in the form of carbohydrates and
nitrogenous substances.
Malt Extract is a useful ingredient of culture media
designed for the isolation, cultivation and enumeration of yeasts and molds.
This ingredient is particularly suitable for yeasts and molds because it
contains a high concentration of carbohydrates, particularly maltose and other
saccharides as energy sources. Dextrin and Glycerin are the carbon sources, and
Peptone is a nitrogen source.
It is also recommended for use in conjunction with other
specific media such as Orange Serum Agar, Yeast Extract Agar or other media for
yeasts and fungi.
